More and more people are beginning to use Voice over Internet Protocol, otherwise known as VOIP, for their evolving communication needs. Cable companies are beginning to offer them as an option for customers who want a telephone, but don’t want to get their service set up through phone companies. There is a greater need to use the internet for every last one of the services we have grown to enjoy, which is why VOIP has become so popular. The downside is that there is a fear that internet firewalls can cause problems for Voice over Internet Protocol services, keeping the customer from properly enjoying what they paid for.

The truth is that firewalls can cause a great deal of problems for any service which requires direct access to the internet in order to function. This can be offset in one important way, though. The way to keep your VOIP service from malfunctioning is simply by setting an exception for the program itself. This will allow the port that your Voice over Internet Protocol service uses to access the internet to be unblocked and there should be no problems connecting the software from that point going forward. It’s the easiest solution to a problem that doesn’t have to exist.

Many people who are considering getting VOIP services are wondering whether selecting it would be more expensive or less expansive than the traditional landline services. In order to answer that question the customer would have to take a look at several aspects of the process. First there is the connection charge. Most VOIP services do not charge the customer an activation fee or any setup fees. Traditional landline companies almost always charge some kind of fee for the connection.

Another thing to consider is the prices of the phone calls. With regular telephone service, the customer generally does not get free long distance calls. He or she may be able to get long distance calls for a monthly fee. This monthly fee would include a certain amount of calls perhaps, and then any additional calls would cost extra. VOIP service almost always offer free unlimited calls to anywhere in the world. You can not get international calls for free with landline service.

So in reviewing all of the various aspects of cost, it appears that VOIP is much less expensive than regular phone service. That is why people are slowly starting to migrate to using this service over the traditional landline features.

The days of traditional landline telephone service are pretty much over. Telecommunications is now dominated by broadband connections and the telephone service is switching more and more toward VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol).

The key to quality service for VOIP providers is the customer’s broadband connection. Broadband service varies depending on the type of delivery. Whether you have cable, DSL, fiber, or wireless, there is a minimum broadband speed required for VOIP. Although there are some providers that can deliver VOIP over a 56k connection, a minimum of 256k or 512k is generally accepted as necessary for a reliable connection.

Because most broadband providers offer their lowest tier plan at speeds well above 256k, there is really no need for concern over the reliability of service on most connections. The quality of the service is greatly improved at broadband speeds that are 1.5 mbps or faster. With most fiber and cable connections, VOIP is rarely, if ever an issue because the speed of those services is well over 10 times as fast as a T-1 connection. As telecom services continue to improve there should soon be no reason to even ask what the minimum speed for VOIP service is, because even the slowest broadband will support it.

Having a VOIP line in your home is a great way to save on telephone calls. Just like a phone line, a VOIP line is going to have problems as well. Since there are many things that can go wrong, there are a few problems that pop up quite a bit. The three main issues are mentioned below, and resolutions that you can use to fix them:

No response from the adapter: Check the adapter to see if the light is blinking. If there is no light blinking, there is no power coming to the source.Never heard of this before? Get up to speed here. Check the adapter or the plug near the wall. It may be best to unplug and plug it back in. Before plugging it back in, make sure that you turn the adapter completely off just to make sure.

There is no dial tone: If you pick up the phone and there is no dial tone, there’s a good chance that either the software froze, or the jack isn’t plugged in properly. What you’re going to want to do is check the back of the computer to see if the jack is plugged in properly. If it is, you may want to reboot the computer to relaunch the software package.

No internet connection: If your VOIP is stating that there is no Internet connection, you may want to either check your LAN adapter or the VOIP port. If you’re able to hop on websites and use the Internet as usual, the VOIP software may need a quick reboot. Simply shut down and power back up. This will solve the problems 99 of the time.
